Making mathematics playful for young children: A route to mastery

Children are naturally mathematical in their play. But practitioners can be unsure about how to build effectively on this or how this observed play ‘fits’ with the mathematics they teach. In this session, Helen will outline relevant research on how young children best learn mathematics; explore how to make mathematics relevant and engaging for young learners and discuss why ‘preparation’ works better than ‘planning’.
